Rcon Commands, A Quick and Easy Guide

Ok, rcon is actually really simple you only really need to remember two commands.
  • rcon addip 0 24.218.153.235 <offenders ip without port>
  • rcon banid 0 STEAM_0:1:4610483 <offenders full steamid>

Of those two, addip is the most powerful. Adding an ip to the banlist automatically kicks the asshat in question. But more importantly it makes the server ignore that ip, meaning they they cannot start attacking the server unless they reconnect to their ISP. You would have to really rage them for them to bother, then you won anyway!

Banid is a whole different kettle of fish. It bans someones STEAMID from the server, this is not really much use if the dickslap has a way of generating keys. So addip is a lot better in most cases. However, if they are using a legit copy, with steam, this will stop them from ever rejoining the server. But if you ban a STEAMID make sure to ban the ip as well, unless you want them trying to packet out the server. Pissing you off and letting them win. Banid doesn't automatically kick the player, so it generally makes sense to run the banid, then addip them to kickban them from the server.

The 0 after the 'addip' and 'banid' stands for time in minutes. Generally you will want this set to 0, permanent ban. We aren't providing the server so these buttmonkeys can come back and try to rage people trying to have a good game. Just ban them forever, cocksuckers.

The final commmands you should know are:
  • rcon writeid
  • rcon writeip
  • rcon kick "Asshat%n"

The first two 'writeid' and 'writeip' write any bans from the current session to the banlists on the server. If you don't use these commands it means they can wait for the server to restart and then happily rejoin. Which means your permanent ban was pointless.

The command 'kick' one is the one you should use most often. Instead of verbally warning a player that if they keep fucking about they will be banned, kick them. Don't tell them why, they will know why, they are probably just wannabe ragers. All you need to do is kick them once, if they complain, or keep doing it, ban them immediately by IP and STEAMID. This is the only way to keep in control, don't ban regulars unless you really have to.

When you use the kick command copy thier whole name including inverted commas "Asshat%n" then just paste it into console. This makes it a LOT easier to kick them than if you miss the inverted commas.
